St Thomas’ Gardens

A historic hospital reimagined as an intergenerational community

St Thomas’ Gardens

Overview

St Thomas’ Gardens is transforming the long-derelict Grade II-listed former hospital site into a pioneering, all-age residential community. Acquired by Stockport Council from Homes England, the scheme will bring together new affordable homes with integrated health and care provision, including an 82-bed intermediate care facility and supported housing. After being vacant for more than 15 years, construction on the care facility, known as the Centre for Living Well, is set to complete in 2026, marking significant progress in bringing the historic site back into use.

  • 82-bed intermediate care facility
  • Eight supported living apartments
  • Planning consent secured for 68 affordable homes

Intergenerational residential community

Delivered by Stockport Council, with support from Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Homes England, St Thomas’ Gardens will be home to the Centre for Living Well. The 82-bed intermediate care facility, alongside eight supported housing units, will support individuals who are discharged from hospital but aren’t yet ready to return home, as well as those who require short-term support to prevent hospital admission, helping them regain independence in a safe and supportive setting. One of the first facilities of its kind in Greater Manchester, it will be complemented with around 68 affordable homes, creating a genuinely mixed and inclusive neighbourhood.

Healthier, connected living

St Thomas’ Gardens will create a new model of town centre living, bringing together housing, care and community in one place. By combining new affordable homes with specialist care provision, the scheme supports residents at different stages of life, fostering independence, connection and long-term wellbeing. With one in four Stockport residents aged 60 and over, the development responds directly to the town’s evolving needs, creating a place where people can live well, stay connected and remain part of their community for longer.
