Stockport Interchange

An award-winning transport hub that transformed Stockport’s gateway

Stockport Interchange

Overview

Completed in 2024, Stockport Interchange is a £140m award‑winning transport hub that has redefined the town’s gateway. Delivered in partnership by Stockport Council, Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Transport for Greater Manchester, it brings together high-quality transport infrastructure, 196 new homes, commercial space and a unique two‑acre rooftop park – the first of its kind in Europe. By transforming an old bus station into a vibrant, multi‑use scheme, the Interchange has not only strengthened Stockport’s connectivity but has become a destination to live, work, and travel, acting as a catalyst for wider regeneration.

  • Two-acre rooftop park, the first of its kind in Europe
  • 196 new homes
  • 780m² new commercial space

State-of-the-art infrastructure

Stockport Interchange sets a new benchmark for sustainable infrastructure. Designed to reduce environmental impact, the scheme, which achieved a 30–50% reduction in embodied carbon, includes an array of PV solar panels generating renewable energy and features a unique ‘blue-roof’ drainage system (SuDS), integrated directly into its two-acre rooftop Viaduct Park. This system captures, stores, and manages rain, mitigating flash flood risks by restricting runoff into the River Mersey. The Interchange, which includes 18 bus stands with capacity for up to 164 departures per hour, has been built Metrolink‑ready, supporting Greater Manchester’s long-term Bee Network ambitions.

More than a transport hub

A new 180‑metre pedestrian and cycle bridge provides seamless connections to the railway station, strengthening active travel routes and making it easier for people to move through the town centre in a convenient, environmentally-friendly way. Meanwhile, Viaduct Park quickly established itself as a popular community space, hosting events, informal gatherings and everyday use, bringing new life and activity into the town centre. Opening up access to the River Mersey has seen the creation of attractive riverside routes and public spaces, while 196 new homes have formed a growing residential community, embedding town centre living at the heart of the development.
